News update is a news story that recaps events and/or information in a particular area or location. Generally, it will be written to appeal to the general public and should discuss current affairs/events that affect most people. This is in contrast to local newspapers and websites which typically focus on a smaller, more specific audience.
The news story should begin with an interesting hook, such as a dramatic anecdote or a surprising fact. This is called the lede and it entices the reader to read more. It should also include the key facts of the article- Who, What, When, Where and Why (5Ws and 1H). This is usually placed in a paragraph called the “nut graph” and it provides the foundation for the rest of the article. It also places the new developments in context by describing the bigger picture.
A good news article will also offer expert quotes and background information. These will help to add credibility to the piece. It should always be noted where these quotes are from to maintain journalistic integrity. The news article should also have a summary at the end, to provide a summary of all the important points and a call to action (if applicable).
Some companies create news updates for their employees. This allows everyone to be on the same page regarding what is happening within the company, and it can also boost morale. Similarly, a local business may run a weekly or monthly newsletter that highlights all the latest news for their city.
