A news update is a timely account of an interesting, significant and important event or development. To write a good news article start by selecting a subject that is relevant and interesting to your readers. Then find a way to convey that subject in a well written, concise and compelling manner.
The first paragraph or lead of the story should be simple and clearly state the topic and what is to follow. Then include the basic facts of what happened, where and when, who was involved and why it’s newsworthy.
Next if possible add some additional background information that helps to make the story more complete and helps readers understand what is happening. This is especially important in cases where the subject matter is volatile or could generate strong reactions from your readers. It is also a great idea to include any important timelines and dates.
Then use the inverted pyramid style when writing the actual news story, putting the most important information at the top of the story and allowing less newsworthy details to be placed lower on the page. Once the article is complete and ready for publication, it’s a good idea to let someone else read it and give you notes. This will help to ensure that you’ve kept the story unbiased and given enough background and information so that your readers can form their own opinions.
