Global affairs is the study of international political and economic relations among nations and non-state actors. Its home discipline is political science, but it also draws from history, anthropology, and modern languages. Its broad knowledge base enables students to understand the interconnectedness of people, places, and ideas in a world that is changing rapidly.
The year 2024 will test the capacity of the international community to agree on coordinated responses to global challenges through organs of collective governance, including the United Nations and NATO. With the ecological crisis deepening, mass migration and displacement accelerating, and gender equality regressing, the coming years will show whether or not we are on track to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
As a major in global affairs, you will acquire the tools you need to make your mark in the world—whether you serve as an activist for human rights, lead a company that provides foreign investment and trade services or manages global operations, research trends as an intelligence analyst, or support governments, nonprofits, and private corporations as a consultant. You will develop skills in communication, critical thinking, and cross-cultural awareness—skills that are invaluable in today’s increasingly interdependent world.
In addition to completing the core requirements of the major, you will complete a senior project either as a Capstone project in GLBL 4499, as a seminar or senior essay in a topical seminar, or as a course in the Global Affairs senior essay course (GLBL 4500). You are required to take a minimum of one L4 language course during your time at Yale.
